Pin – RMNP North American Wildlife Series Beaver

Beavers are large, brown, aquatic (water-living) mammals that reach lengths of three to four feet and weights of up to 40 pounds. They have waterproof fur and slap their tails on the water to warn other beavers of impending danger. Beavers’ teeth grow their entire lives and are orange due to an iron-rich, protective coating of enamel. They are active in riparian areas all year long and can stay submerged under water for up to 15 minutes. Scientists regard beaver as a keystone species, which is a species that modifies the environment in such a way that modifies the ecosystem and encourages the presence of other species.
